Global Classrooms London is pleased to announce the 19th GC London: Model United Nations Conference celebrating the 25th anniversary of the UNCRC.  The conference is open to students aged 13-18 and will welcome approximately 300 state school students from London and our GC international school partners.

Our conference program:

GC London is proud to be the largest secondary school-level Model United Nations programme in the UK. This formal and professional two-day student conference has a warm, supportive atmosphere aimed to promote cooperation, leadership and confident global citizenship. The conferences are entirely led by student leaders and university students (alumni of the programme). The Model UN conferences adopt Global Classrooms approach, where students assume roles as ambassadors of an assigned country, research and write country position papers on their assigned committee topic, and - through discussion and negotiation, seek to build a consensus towards a resolution during the conference.

The conference structure aims to progress both new and experiences delegates. GC London warmly welcomes first time delegates: about one third of our students at each conference will be new to Model UN. Experienced delegates are invited to apply for one of two fast-paced and challenging 'Joint Crisis Committees' (open to experienced and able delegates who have attended two or more conferences).

Prior to the conference, delegations and supporting staff are provided with comprehensive research and preparatory resources including: committee background guides, position paper templates, multimedia resources and other research links via the delegate sections of this website. Where possible, GC London also provides free training sessions for first-time schools. For supporting staff, our conferences offer creative and powerful learning for your students, as well as important opportunities to network with colleagues in our partnership of over forty schools.
Student outcomes:

The programme has been hugely successful in engaging students and teachers in global issues and developing skills in leadership, debate, public speaking, research, negotiation, diplomacy and conflict resolution. Student leadership is at the heart of the programme; the committees are student led and delegates can take on increasing responsibility, eventually rising to the role of Secretary General. Model UN is the vehicle not only to teach students about becoming global citizens, but also acts as powerful tool for community cohesion. In Mulberry’s 2010 and 2013 Ofsted reports, the Model UN Programme contributed to the judgment of ‘Outstanding’ and was highlighted as an excellent enrichment opportunity for students.

Universities value student leadership and participation in this programme. Many former students are now involved in Model UN societies at University level – notably, Cambridge University, the London School of Economics, SOAS, St. George’s University of London, Queen Mary University of London and the University of York. The alumni return as Directors – providing role models for progression and aspiration and ensuring conference rigour.
